Second post today, to say Joey has a point!

Yesterday Joey posted about the inconsistency in sizes and the fact that sizes have changed over time. I had my suspicions about the change in sizes, but this proves the point too. I was looking on line for ball gowns and I love a portrait collar, so I searched that and found this old pattern, size 14, bust 32". Then I searched measurements for a size 14 on patterns today, a 14 is bust 36, waist 27, hips 38. Then on most of the dress charts, a 14 has a 40" bust. So, there you have it.

Have a great weekend!

That is a very beautiful pattern. There are couple of bloggers out there (I link to one on my 'we did it' page) that like to make up vintage patterns. On the size calibration issue; our size ranges have changed twice in the last two generations. in the 60's there was a shift. They did it again in the mid to late 80's. My mom and I are both sewers and we had a discussion about it recently. My mom's size 12 from high school became a 10 and then would now be (if she hadn't gained weight with age) an 8. When I left school my size size 14 is now a 12 (at the same weight). That of course is not accounting for the extra inches we get in certain waists etc. at various stores today.

Love a portrait collar!
I remember watching I Love Lucy and Lucy saying she was a size 12......more like a 6 by today's measurements.

I know I am late to this post but I thought it funny because. My cousin recently lost weight and she was saying she can wear some size 10s and trust me. although it was many moons ago when i was a size 10 I was a lot smaller than she is now. She is probably about 160+ I wore 9/10 in the low 130's. I mention that it's amazing how different it is and realized later that I probably sounded like a hater.
